with 64 votes. we passed the hurricane sandy emergency relief bill also in bipartisan fashion, with 62 votes. we had open debate, we had discussions, we had amendments, and we passed legislation. particularly we passed by a powerful bipartisan vote of 89-8, a bill that avoided tax increases for 99% of americans and extended emergency unemployment benefits for another year and protected us from the fiscal cliff. when it comes to legislating, the senate actually has a pretty strong bipartisan record. how did those senate bills do on the house side? well, the house couldn't pass its own highway bill. congress has been doing highway bills since the eisenhower years. this isn't rocket science. the house couldn't do one. the best the house of representatives could do was to pass a short-term extension that allowed some of their members to get to conference on the senate bill. but they took no bill into conference because they couldn't pass one. even then they delayed the conference negotiations and they cost the united states of america an entire summer construction season for highway constr

this. last month at sandy hook, a place where children should be able to learn and grow, the and comprehensible actions six adults and 20 innocent children were murdered in cold blood. we have seep similar acts of terror in aurora and okay land and tucson, all across the country. -- oakland and tucson, all across the country. we see the loss of life every day from gun violence all across this nation. after the unthinkable tragedy in newtown, president obama spoke to the country and he asked us are we doing enough to protect our children? the answer he admitted is no. that must change. that is why we are here today. today's hearing we will hear from people who deal with the effects of gun violence every day. the wide range of experience will facilitate a discussion on common sense and constructive steps we must take to ensure these tragedies will never happen again. i've a letter from the teachers of newtown which i will enter into the record. i will share with you one sentence it reed, in our schools we ensure the schools have the right balance to ensure they are safe. w
and my family. and speaking of family, i want to share a story about my sister, sandy. my sister sandy's weakness, like many, was always sugar. she had high blood sugar and was on medication for high blood pressure. sandy had always gone up and down with her weight. no matter what she tried, she was never able to lose the weight and keep it off. here's a picture of sandy a little over a year ago. and no, that is not her baby. [laughter] well, sandy started paying attention to the amount of sugar she was eating each day. and let me tell you, like most of you would be, she was very surprised. she had no idea she was eating that much sugar, because it wasn't the obvious sugar, like in cakes or cookies and donuts. but it was also the carbs, like bread and pasta. you see, carbs turn to sugar in the body. and here's a tip: understanding that carbs turn to sugar is a great way to get started. here's a picture of sandy six months later. she looks and feels great. what did sandy do? she lowered the amount of sugar in her diet to no more than 10 teaspoons daily. and how's her health now? no high

. it's good for you. >> arthel: more than two months after super storm sandy hit the northeast, one of the nation's leading hospitals reopened its doors. nyu medical center suffered extensive damage from the storm, but it's now operating at nearly 100% capacity. fox news medical a teamer dr. mark siegle spoke to the doctors and the dean in an exclusive interview. >> it feels great to have the hospital back up and running. you know. it was a little erie feeling to walk the halls of a hospital and not see a multitude of patients and their families every day. >> one of the major hospitals crippled by super storm sandy, in, yu medical center in new york city suffered extensive damage. flooded with over 15 million gallons of water, the main campus was shut down for two months. >> when you face catastrophic events and more than from those events, you emerge stronger. if anything, we're a more united medical center. i'm struck by the spirit of the people who are working here. >> as the storm raged, hospital staff rushed to evacuate over 300 patients down dark stairwells relying only on bat
because it's so large. a smaller school like a sandy hook, it's smaller, it's easier to lock down. this sort of situation, there's so much space to be covered. >> well, and i think that's the challenges on any college campus. it's not like a grade school where you have one door in and one door out and you can buzz people through a door. here you have thousands of students and faculty members and guests that can come in and out and a number of different ways, number of different vehicles. texas has a right to carry law. you can carry a concealed weapon even though you can't carry it on campus but let me ask you this. let's say the college had 10,000, 15,000 people on campus today. how do you screen 15,000 people for the presence of a firearm? >> right. >> we can do that at an airport. we can do it at a federal building in washington, d.c. as we have people come in but on a college campus almost impossible to do and one wanders how many people carry legally or otherwise a concealed weapon on college campus. realize my statistic in recent year, almost 1,500 incidents of firearm-relat

year which also provided much-needed relief funds for hurricane sandy victims. that was a bipartisan bill. it was supported by senate republicans and democrats alike. but the republicans in the house regrettably gutted the bill and sent back legislation that explicitly cut out wildfire relief. in that context, let me make one point absolutely clear. this is an emergency. some people have questioned the need for funding and have asked why we wouldn't limit dollars to just hurricane sandy saer kwras like the bill -- hurricane sandy areas. the short answer is it is the fiscally smart thing to do, the right thing to do, and the fair thing to do. this bill is an emergency appropriations bill for all national disasters, not just hurricane sandy. it is our best hope of seeing wildfire relief. i emphatically note that the colorado emergencies occurred before hurricane sandy and the west should not have to continue to wait. very few emergency supplemental bills pass congress. this bill is passing now, and it should include aid for colorado and other states across our country. we as americans,
things forward. i think it's really remarkable and i think we all now recognize with hurricane sandy, with the inclement weather and the winter we're having now that climate change and renewable power and local energy provision is paramount and we need to main ain and amplify that commitment as a city. i also continue to have my eye on the prize of the local build out and the promise of that because i think not only is the job opportunity great, and all kinds of implications around work force training and at the local level and diversify that source and needs to be local and hurricane sandy has shown us that. that if there were nor localized power 4,000 people wouldn't be out of power right now so i am supportive of moving forward as quickly as possible with the education and outreach that needs to happen. i also concur with president torres and this is organic and evolving and this financing piece is really an important discussion to have and i would welcome having that with the lafco to talk about if the possibility of local build out over this four year contract could reduce th
